Grounding is a coping strategy used to help our mind stay in the present moment. In our day to day we may experience particularly challenging states of mind from time and time and having techniques which help us stay tethered to the present moment can help deal with very real paralysis of the mind.
It is so important to remember to practice these techniques while you are feeling calm and centered. Knowing which activity works for you will help increase the effectiveness of these techniques.
Try any one of the following techniques:
Box breathing covered in Mindfulness and Covid-19 (https://www.satuppada.com/post/mindfulness-and-covid-19).
Talking to a family member or friend
Tend to your growing jungle (https://www.satuppada.com/post/indoor-gardener).
Get moving. Exercise is a great way to help us feel grounded within our own bodies. Focus on the sensations in your body, the tightness in your muscles, the changes in your breathing and if you are outside, the sensations of the sun or wind.
Try introducing essential oils. Place a few drops into the palm of your hand and gentle breathe in the scent. Try Lavender to calm, Sandalwood to calm nerves and help focus or Rose to improve mood.
Try focusing on one particular sense. Hold an ice cube and focus on the sensations of temperature, touch and texture.
The 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 technique. Look around you and identify:
5 things you can see
4 things you can feel
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
