Arrive early! Not only does it show your potential employer that you are punctual, it also gives you some time to prepare yourself. The mental psych out works for some. Positive self talk definitely is always welcome, but sometimes the pressure can be just that much more where getting mentally psyched can cause the opposite of what we want: anxiety and stress. To combat the mental rush we might all feel, try to find a seat which is a little out of the way and try the following:
1. Place your bag and other belongings at your feet
2. Ensure your feet are flat on the ground and you are sitting comfortably. You can opt to close your eyes or keep them open. (If you are keeping them open, try to keep your eyes downcast to avoid any visual distractions).
3. Focus on how your body feels as you are sitting in the chair. Notice the pressure under your thighs, the weight of your hands on your lap.
4. Bring your attention to your breathing. Is it shallow, deep, fast slow?
5. Take a moment to make note and start to take gentle breaths in and out. Focus on the flow of air and the gentle rise of fall of your chest or stomach.
Giving your mind the opportunity to focus on one task that is not related to the interview buys you some time to refresh. Take the time to slow down your breathing and relax your body. Once you feel ready, you can bring your mind to the position of your body and then gently to your surroundings.
You're ready to take on the interview with a calm and refreshed mind!
Some additional tips to try prior to your interview:
1. Have a great breakfast by including mood boosting foods like oatmeal and mango. Sprinkle in some nuts food additional mood boosting Serotonin.
** If oatmeal isn't your thing, just try going for something that isn't too greasy or heavy. Having a heavy breakfast can cause you to feel sluggish later on.
2. Use Essential Oils such as Lavender, Bergamot and Neroli in a warm bath the night before. These scents are calming and can help you get a great nights rest which is very important.
3. Cool water dabbed on your inner wrist and behind your ears can help cool you down because your arteries are much closer to the surface in these areas.
