Moments of intense emotions are challenging to deal with. If you recall a time when you felt intensely sad or maybe angry, what was that like? For many of us, we search for a way to ground or anchor ourselves in a bid to locate a center point of focus; almost like the light we seek at the end of a long tunnel. While they may not all resonate with you, here are some things you can try to help you stay grounded and find calm quickly: Try to: 1. Lay down on the ground. Imagine the ground absorbing all of your negative energy but see your body absorbing the grounded positive energy of the earth. 2. Stay quiet and close your eyes 3. Drink warm and soothing drinks 4. If possible, go for a walk outside barefoot 5. Listen to soothing music of nature or calming binaural beats 6. Apply a cold compress to your neck and head Try to Avoid:
Caffeine
Crowded Places
Loud sounds
Strong, stimulating scents
The trick to these tips is repetition. When we are in the midst of intense emotions, it can be difficult to put a new technique into practice. My suggestion would be to try and incorporate one or a few of the below into your daily routine. By practicing every day, you begin the process of training your brain to seek calm. The more you practice, the stronger the neural pathways in the brain become, which leads to us being able to seek calm more quickly. Soothing practices to incorporate into your daily routine:
Have a well built out bedtime routine
Practice meditation (or a mindful practice)
Wear a heated eye mask
Eat slowly and with intention
Play with a pet or small kids
Spend some time out in nature
Embody a loving kindness mindset
Walk barefoot
